The Ratel coming 2027!

2025 wasn’t the year for The Ratel Expedition Race, but 2027 will be.

The Ratel Expedition Race, set in the breathtaking and rugged terrain of the Richtersveld, was due to launch in June 2025 as a world-class, character-testing adventure. However, due to unforeseen circumstances beyond the organisers’ control, the event has been postponed to 2027.

While this decision was not taken lightly, the organising team is committed to delivering an event that’ll provide an experience unparalleled and a real expedition. Hosting an event of this magnitude in one of the most remote and extreme environments on the continent requires substantial and reliable support, and the NFNF team will only host it if they can deliver on that.

“The Ratel Expedition Race is about endurance, resilience, and the wild spirit of adventure,” said Race Director Robert Le Brun. “We remain 100% committed to bringing the race to life in 2027 and ensuring that when teams from around the world line up at the start, they will experience an event that is worthy of the Richtersveld and of the global adventure racing community.”

The Richtersveld, a UNESCO World Heritage site often described as the ‘holy grail’ of adventure destinations, promises a challenge unlike any other, with its lava mountains, sandy plains, and the life-giving waters of the Orange River. Competitors in 2027 will face a grueling 450km course, combining hiking, mountain biking, and kayaking through this stark yet spectacular wilderness.

The organising team would like to extend their gratitude to the Adventure Racing World Series (ARWS), regional stakeholders, and the adventure racing community for their continued belief in the race and their patience during this postponement.
